Years ago, regardless of your personal income bracket, you could go boating. You could buy an old wood boat outfitted with a small outboard and go out on regular fishing trips throughout the summer, supported primarily by your meager weekly allowance. My, how things have changed. Wood boats are few and far between, long since replaced by more durable fiberglass models. And single small outboards are rarely spotted as they’ve been replaced by quad set-ups with thousands of horsepower. When you look at the bottom line of popular boats run through boat magazine tests, it’s hard to ignore that many new boats cost the same as fancy art pieces. Now, you can’t have as much fun on a painting as you can on a boat, but the point remains that the bar to participation has risen significantly. Boating remains an excellent experience for those that enjoy the water. Let’s just hope that the price of participation does not float above the reach of ordinary folks like you and me.
