Crossing Paths
Just last weekend while boating on Cape Ann, a dangerous situation arose between two boats crossing paths. A large sailboat, about 45-50’ long, under power, was exiting a mooring field that was protected from the open ocean by a tall granite breakwater. The sailboat was moving from west to east behind the breakwater into the narrow main channel. At the same time, a 40’ powerboat was returning to port, moving from south to north. The breakwater hid the sailboat until it was squarely in the center of the channel, leaving the powerboat little time to react. I watched the scenario quickly unfold with concern. Fortunately, the powerboat captain quickly surmised the situation, correctly identified his boat as the give-way vessel, and turned to starboard, passing safely behind the stern of the sailboat. Had the powerboat captain stayed on course, or passed in front of the sailboat, the result could have been traumatic. The question is: are you familiar enough with the rules of the road to take the correct action quickly to ensure the safety of your vessel and crew?
