These days, most boaters carry smart phones which deliver both phone calls and Internet applications. Due to this dual functionality, many boaters have been paying less attention to traditional VHF radios, which is not a good idea. Third, the USCG, through its Rescue 21 program, can triangulate on your VHF radio’s signal and determine your location even in poor weather conditions, a very valuable benefit. VHF radios remain a core part of the safety gear aboard. Make sure you give it the attention it deserves.
