April 19, 2015
The Volvo Ocean race, sometimes referred to as the “Around the World” race, began in Alicante, Spain on October 14, 2014 and will end in Gothenburg, Sweden between June 21 and June 23. The race is comprised of seven boats with, typically, eight member crews. The race stretches over nine legs, eleven ports, and 38,739 nautical miles. Newport, RI is the stopover point between legs six and seven, from May 5 to May 17. According to the Volvo’s official website, the boats will perform in Pro-Am racing on May 15th, and an in-port race on May 16. This is a very rare and unusual event. So, if you’re into high performance ocean sailboat racing, be sure to put this on your calender.
