Boating Etiquette

June 26, 2023

It’s common knowledge that the social environment we live in has become more complex in recent years. Texting, oftentimes accomplished with no punctuation and more emoji’s than words is a perfect example of where etiquette appears to be in short supply. Surprisingly, another place where respect and manners seems to have evaporated is at the dock.

How many times have you approached the dock and been boxed out of a space by visitors from out of town? Or once landed, had to cool your heels while someone does their spring commissioning deep-dive cleaning using the only available hose in the middle of Sunday afternoon?

At first glance, it would seem common sense to minimize your profile on an unfamiliar dock or to save the deep dive cleaning for a mid-morning weekday. But, common seems to be a precious commodity these days.

I guess the lesson is that all of us need a gentle reminder to engage in thoughtful behavior, even when enjoying a day on the water.
