Fall Boating – Ups & Downs

October 13, 2015

This past Sunday was warm and sunny, a great day for North shore boating and  the experience brought back a few points. First, Fall boating is characterized by fresh breezes, clear water and little boating traffic – all good things. Two, post-summer boating is also recognizable by heavy swells and a sun which sets each day at an astoundingly rapid rate – both not so good things. So, how do you enjoy the good and deal with the “bad”? Basically, be prepared. Before going down to the boat, make sure you’ve got the right clothing to keep warm and dry; and check the weather forecast for any problematic outlooks. At the dock, check the anchor for ease of use; check the radio for proper operation; file a float plan with someone; and make sure everyone has a life jacket on. Once underway, considering topping off your fuel supply to avoid the possibility of running dry. And, when out in open water, keep a close eye out for lobster pot buoys that could tangle a propeller; make sure everyone has a firm hold on the boat someplace; and keep your eye on the time to avoid night time operation. Fall boating is a lot of fun, you just need to observe the basics a bit more fully. Do that and you’ll surely enjoy the final boating days of the season.
