Recently, several major boating publications have run pieces on hydrofoil boats. These boats rise up out of the water on submerged foils attached to the hull. They offer a smooth ride and excellent fuel efficiency. Historically, recreational boat applications have encountered technical issues which have made them suitable in a limited number of settings. However, based on the press coverage, it appears that many of the initial design challenges have been overcome. Now, if you boat primarily in “skinny” water, foil draft may preclude consideration of one of the new market entries. However, if you boat in slightly deeper water, you might want to consider one of these boats, as the benefits are clear to see.
