Important Details
Recently, a friend and I were talking about the seemingly small, but important things to address during the late fall and early winter season. An example in point was his spare tire mounted on the trailer. The initial plan was sound – tie the tire down at multiple points and add a chain and lot to prevent theft. This was all well and good, except that after 10 years he had long lost the padlock key and the tire had lost some significant pressure. If the spare was really needed, this situation would not have led to a happy ending. So, since there was no snow yet, my friend cut the anchoring ropes free and used a hand-held grinder to remove the lock. Then, he got the wheel/tire combo completely checked out at the local service station and, using a new lock, chain, and line tie downs, he re-secured the spare tire to the trailer. Now, he’s set for next season’s possibilities. There are a lot of small jobs you can do on your boat before the snow flies and they’re certain to make a difference in your future boating experience.
