Headings

December 28, 2014

Just  yesterday I visited with a local marine retailer to see what small GPS units were available, and I learned a lot. First, GPS units vary significantly in terms of ease of use, and some manufacturers even suggest using YouTube videos to get the hang of the interface. Second, most GPS units are pretty rugged these days, more than capable of taking the vibration and moisture that is characteristic of small boat operation. Third, larger screens carry notable price increases. Fourth, mounting a GPS right next to your compass is not good practice as GPS magnets can stimulate significant, and oftentimes undetected, compass errors. GPS units are great boating aids, Using a little forethought in the selection and installation process will help ensure safety, and fun, on the water.
