MId-Winter Check

February 25, 2024

Well, it’s late February, and while there is little snow on the ground, it’s cold out. Chances are good that it has been awhile since you last checked the boat. There are lots of reasons to support making a trip to the boat, in spite of the freezing temperatures. For instance, a quick look will confirm that no water is getting through the winter cover leading to spots of icing and subsequent ice expansion damage. The look will also confirm the fact that the cover is not rubbing excessively on the hull wearing spots in the gelcoat or chrome surface. If you have rodent control devices in place, a mid-winter check can inform you of the possible need to “recharge” the devices to maintain solid coverage. And, a check can help reassure you that your propulsion system has been adequately serviced and protected as appropriate before winter arrived. These, of course, are not all the benefits of performing a quick mid-winter check, but you get the idea. As the old expression goes “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
