Spring Commissioning – Coverings

April 12, 2026

Well, we’re mid-way through April and the temps are slowly, but surely, starting to rise. Soon, the winter cover will come off, and pre-launch activities will start in earnest.

As any DIY boater knows, there are plenty of chores to perform from washing and waxing the hull; to oiling the teak; and sanding and painting the bottom. The last one, the bottom, can be a particularly challenging job, starting with the selection of masking tape, paint, rollers, and brushes.

Now, it all sounds pretty simple until you hit the paint aisle of your local marine retailer. I recently did and invested the first ten minutes in exploring the differences between masking tape offerings. Then, it was off to the paint aisle where an even greater variety was stacked on the shelves. Fortunately for me, I already had a preferred product and had also produced a couple of TV shows on the topic in recent years. The experience and base knowledge helped navigate all the critical areas, including the brush and roller section where products may need to be aligned with the paints selected.

So, gather up some information (maybe from the TV shows) and head over to the store, leaving yourself a little extra time to sort through all the offerings. The time invested will be well worth it.
