Drawbridge Navigation

June 22, 2026

It’s mid-June and we’re in the early stage of the boating season. As boat components and systems from anchor and lines to electronic GPS units wear in again, so do mental messages from right red return to anchor light operation.

One important bundle of messages involves cut bridges for auto traffic and railroad cars. Some of the messages include: communicate with the bridge master so they know your desired actions; use your horn when you have a really bad blind corner; stay in line to avoid confusion; carry only the speed you need to maintain headway while under the bridge to avoid swamping other boats; and be patient, as some very serious consequences can come from hasty decisions.

If you’re an experienced boater, you know these points and many others. Unfortunately, many boaters do not and you have to be proactive to keep both of you safe.
