Maine Boat Builders Show 2018

This past weekend I attended the Annual Maine Boat Builders show in Portland, Maine. There were lots of interesting vendor displays of small rowing boats to large custom lobster yachts, and bottom paints to solar systems. Industry association and marine vocational school reps helped round out the mix. Historically, this show stood out from others due to its unique location and the knowledge level of booth representatives and attendees. alike. While this show's venue, a youth sport complex, did not have the same character as the old train depot it replaced, boaters at the show displayed the usual high level [...]

Maine Boatbuilders Show, Friday, March 24 – Sunday, March 26

The spring boat show season is moving into high gear. The New England show finished a couple of weeks ago, and the Maine Show is on the horizon. While both shows feature new boats and marine services, there is a decided difference in the “feel” of them. The New England show is big, and revolves around recreational fiberglass production craft from a variety of large boat manufacturers. The Maine show is more intimate, and is comprised of small custom boat builders who work with wood and fiberglass, oftentimes using commercial Down East hull designs as their foundations. Both shows are [...]

46th Annual Newport International Boat Show, September 15 – 18th

It’s hard to believe, but summer is winding down, and the fall boat shows are on the horizon. The Newport show is particularly enjoyable due to its downtown location; in-water boat displays; accessory booth variety; and  weekend workshops. The show always features an interesting mix of traditional and new products. Advance tickets are available at a discount through organizations such as Boat U.S. If you’re a boater and live anywhere within a few hours of Newport, this is a show that you won’t want to miss.

Maine Boatbuilders Show, March 18-20, Portland ME

The annual Maine Show is coming up fast. The Show will feature a broad and diversified group of marine specialists. Boat builders that work with metal, fiberglass, and wood will be on hand, as well as boat yards, marinas, paint manufacturers, electronic manufacturers, and many others. The Boatbuilders Show is very different from more mainstream shows held further south in that the setting is a large, old, rambling commercial waterfront structure and the environment has a strong Downeast flavor. If you consider yourself a real boat enthusiast, this show is well worth the trip.

Boat Show Snippets

Last Sunday marked the end of the winter boat show and luckily I was able to attend on the final day. Cruising the event floor, I talked with many vendors and, interestingly, each conversation contained useful informational snippets. The custom upholstery manufacturer brought up the importance of scheduling interior and cushion work at least six months ahead. The propeller repair shop cited new, unusual, propeller designs with blades that incorporated foil-like configurations. The fisheries representative shared the need to license every salt water fisherman on the boat, guest or regular. And, the paint representative mentioned how the Gulf of Maine [...]

Progressive® Insurance New England Boat Show, February 13-21

The annual winter boating show will fill the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center when it kicks off in about two weeks. As usual, the show will feature powerboats, sailboats, and marine accessories. Seminars will be offered on servicing outboards, stern drives, and inboards, as well as other topics such propellers and accessory installation. Daily workshops will cover a variety of topics from docking procedures to navigation. If you need to break out of the mid-winter blues, this show could be just the ticket.
