Education Time
It’s a cold, wet March day, definitely not a day to work on the boat. However, it might be a good day to research boating courses or seminars that you could participate in prior to spring launch. There are many local sources: the Harbormaster; the US Power Squadron; and the Yacht or Boat club. In addition, there is a plethora of courses offered online. So, do a little exploring and find a place to get more education on your favorite [...]
Online Navigation Course
Navigational skills are useful regardless of whether you’re piloting on a river, lake, or ocean. However, for many boaters, it’s not convenient to attend a classroom-based course. Recently the BoatUS Foundation and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary created a solution, an online course titled Modern Marine Navigation. The course provides participants with the opportunity apply their new navigational knowledge to a series of online voyages. Some key topics include pre-planning; fixing a boat’s position; laying out courses; plotting positions; measuring distances; and obtaining tide information. More information on this valuable online course is available at BoatUS.org/navigation.
“Planning Your Cruise”
The United States Power Squadrons and BoatUS Foundation recently partnered to develop a new online course to help boaters plan their summer trips. “Planning Your Cruise” was designed to address the educational needs of both new and experienced captains with limited amounts of time for cruising. It covers a broad range of subjects from crew selection to security. The $30 course is available through www.BoatUS.org/courses.
