Timing is Right

The Wall Street Journal recently published a “state of the union” article on boat and RV manufacturers The article highlighted how low interest rates and a desire to practice social distancing led to sales peaks during the pandemic. And, how the momentum has shifted, as evidenced in Brunswick Corporation’s recent 22% sales decrease, year over year. This dramatic shift in momentum is certain to stimulate manufacturer promos, and to cool-down red hot used boat prices. This could be the perfect time to buy a boat. As always, take time to review your true boating needs prior to shopping and [...]

Foiled

Recently, several major boating publications have run pieces on hydrofoil boats. These boats rise up out of the water on submerged foils attached to the hull. They offer a smooth ride and excellent fuel efficiency. Historically, recreational boat applications have encountered technical issues which have made them suitable in a limited number of settings. However, based on the press coverage, it appears that many of the initial design challenges have been overcome. Now, if you boat primarily in “skinny” water, foil draft may preclude consideration of one of the new market entries. However, if you boat in slightly deeper water, [...]

Boat Show on the Horizon

The New England Boat Show is coming up – February 15 – 19 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. As usual, it will feature boats, engines and accessories from a broad range of manufacturers. Shows Ahead

Labor Day weekend, the unofficial start to Fall, is here. Around here, that signals the end of the boating season, which is always bad news. On the positive side, it also highlights the fact that the Newport International Boat Show is on the horizon. The largely in-water show, held from September 15-18 features a broad array of powerboats, sailboats, and accessories. It’s a great venue for convenient comparison shopping and there’s always something new to take in from a new sunroof format to an over-the-top propulsion set-up. Have some fun while exploring the possibilities for your next vessel. Make your [...]

NY Boat Show, Jan. 6-10

The first major boat show of the year will commence tomorrow at the Javits Center in NY. The show has run for 110 years, and will feature boats of all shapes and sizes. Boat shows offer an excellent opportunity for buyers to compare many different boats under one roof. New York can be difficult to access, however, if you’re a boater who is seriously searching for a new boat, the NY show could be the right one for you.

Fire It Up

Earlier today an old friend of mine stopped by to talk about boats. He had just sold his center console and was looking for another boat to buy before the newfound cash got reallocated to a more mundane purpose such as redoing the main bathroom or putting shingles on the garage. He had his eye on a similar, but newer craft with more modern power, and he was looking to get some advice on steps to take in order to avoid a bad case of buyer’s remorse. We discussed some of the basics: make sure the new boat is suited [...]

Boat Shows

For many boaters, Fall is not the best of seasons; summer is over and winter is fast approaching. However, there is one bright spot, namely the Fall boat shows. A few of the larger, better-known, Fall shows are the Newport Boat Show in September; the U.S. Powerboat Show in Annapolis, MD from 10/15-10/18; and the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in Fort Lauderdale, FL from 11/5-11/9. If you're shopping for a new craft, boat shows allow you to easily compare similar boats, side-by-side, and if you're shopping for a pre-owned vessel, the brokers' boards are filled with listings to talk with [...]
