Pre-Season Safety Checklist

March 29, 2026

It’s the end of March, and while the snow has melted, it is pretty raw outside with cool temperatures and strong breezes. Boat preparation time is close, but we’re not quite there, yet.  To make good use of this time, you might consider doing a check of safety equipment.

For example, flares have expiration dates. If yours are beyond the legal limits they’ll need replacement. You might even consider one of those new electronic beacons.

Personal Flotation Devices are pretty straightforward, Get the right size and type for all passengers. You’ll want to give them a close inspection as time in the sun and weather can cause materials to break down and compromise performance.

Horns are simple items which are typically very reliable. However, they don’t get used often and rust can settle in. Perhaps a backup in in order.

VHF radios are typically very durable, but sometimes they can become somewhat obsolete. A case in point is the new DSC emergency help request feature on the new models. A single touch of the red button alerts authorities and other boaters of your distress, replacing the more complex old-school process.

The list goes on, but you get the drift. Accessories such as visual safety signals, PFDs, Horns and VHF radios are not sexy, but very important. Take a quick look now while the weather is too poor to do much else. When the weather turns, you’ll be ready to focus on other things, speeding up your progress towards launch.
