Seadog Submerges

July 17, 2018

This past Saturday morning, I grabbed a breakfast sandwich at the local Dunkin Donuts and went down to the harbor to look at the boats. While sitting on the park bench, savoring the tasty bacon, egg, and cheese combo, I noticed nautical-looking dinghy, Seadog, lightly swinging back and forth on its mooring. After mentally trying to guess the name of the mother ship for a few minutes, I finished off my sandwich and moved on to morning chores.

Later, about 4pm in the afternoon, when returning my boat to the mooring, I noticed the Seadog had taken on a very different profile, strikingly similar to that of a submarine in the last stages of a dive maneuver. The boat was filled with water and the bow looked as if it was going to disappear beneath the waves, momentarily.

“How did the Seadog get in so much trouble, so quickly?”, I wondered. My best guess was that the mooring rode length was too short to deal with the unusually high tide and the boat was literally being dragged beneath the surface. I could just imagine the captain’s surprise when arriving back at the mooring.

The morale of the story is that boating is a fun adventure made up of a bunch of small, interconnected activities. To consistently enjoy the experience, it’s important to keep your eye on the ball…
