Parallel Universes
Earlier today, I read an interesting article in Soundings that focused on a modern version of the Mayflower. The 53-foot trimaran, named for the historical vessel, will operate autonomously and be propelled by a hybrid propulsion system as it performs ocean research. While most people are aware of “self-driving” cars, many are unaware of autonomous boats. But, when you think about it, many of the pros and cons related to vehicles could apply to boats. It’s certain that technology is going to impact both driving and piloting. Let’s hope we can find a balance between the application of new technologies [...]
Autonomous Vessels On The High Seas
Four hundred years ago the Mayflower sailed from England to the New World. This year, another boat named Mayflower is going to follow the same route. However this 53-foot trimaran will be piloted by artificial intelligence (AI) instead of a captain and propelled by a hybrid propulsion system instead of sails. The new boat will enable researchers from around the world access to new ocean data. More details are outlined in the Soundings article https://www.soundingsonline.com/features/a-new-mayflower. Could this be the future of boating?
