Get Smart

November 30, 2014

After the first snow storm of the season, it’s safe to say that winter has arrived and most water-based boating activities have come to a stop. However, if you look closely, there are some bright spots.  If you’re near the ocean and like to sail, you can join a “frost-biter” sailing group. Or, if you live on large lake  you might be able to go ice boating. And, there’s a third choice that’s particularly attractive if you’re not up for being outside in the cold weather, namely, getting engaged and educated. You can learn through seminars, workshops, and classes at a variety of convenient locations. Two educational venues that come to mind here locally are the United States Power Squadron and Lowell’s Boat Shop. The Power Squadron typically runs winter courses on topics ranging from basic navigation to advanced seamanship. And Lowell’s Boat Shop features winter boat building classes where people work in groups to build Amesbury Rowing Skiffs. Class costs are reasonable and the fun is immeasurable. So, don’t sit there on the hard wondering what to do until next April, engage, get educated, and get smart.
